End of an era for tier 2 hockey in Peterborough
By Dale Clifford, Peterborough Examiner

The Stars OJHL merger with the Lindsay Muskies marks the end of an era of that level of hockey in Peterborough.

No one was able to say for sure how long junior B or tier 2 hockey has been here as there was no such hockey for a period following its birth but organizers say the current organization went back at least 40 consecutive years.

There were such teams as the Roadrunners and the Bees before they became the Stars.  The league name changed as well from Metro to today.

Current OHA Central Junior C convenor Jim Orr was general manager of a Peterborough entry for 14 years, from 1982-1996.  He said it's sad to see it go but was positive for the future.  "It was a spot for local players to play and that will be missed," he said.  "It may be tough for some local kids because of the travel.  It's not that far but still 40 minutes all round. It did well for Peterborough and we had good teams,  It will take time getting used to and we will see how it plays out."

Paul Bedford, the Stars' coach/GM last season, was looking forward to coming back.
"I'm disappointed and feel bad for the city of Peterborough but I can understand the business side of it," he said.  "It's tough to compete in the OJHL.  I really enjoyed working with my staff.  There is a lot of good talent coming back.  It may take a while and we will see how it works out.  There was a strong rivalry between the teams and it will be interesting to see.  It's good for Lindsay because it is the only game in town."

So ends the era of Junior A hockey in Peterborough.   After 14 years with the organization I have made a lot of friendships with the players over the years. We have had some real good time.  I certainly appreciate the support given to me by the players and wish to thank the fans and all of the volunteers for their loyal support.  I will miss coming to the arena.  Not sure if I will miss the long hours I put in or not but will definitely miss working with all the players that have passed through the team  It has been a pure pleasure working with them and I wish them all the success in the world.
